No craft captures the magic of Morocco with more colour, pattern and virtuosity than that of zellige mosaic tiling.
All of our tiles start as squares, moulded and cut by hand from the grey clay of Fes, naturally-dried, then glazed and kiln-fired in colours such as emerald green or Majorelle blue.
These squares then give rise to smaller differently shaped pieces – from simple rectangles to complex polygons – drawn on the tile by a rasham, cut out by a naqqash, and trimmed by a khallas.
Then comes the extraordinary contribution of the zellige maalem, who has the mathematical skill and manual dexterity to assemble thousands of these pieces into an elaborate geometrically precise design.
